Introduction

Reddit user nicfrae, with the help of the keto diet, managed to shed 55 pounds in two years after a doctor warned her that she was at risk of developing diabetes. Despite having symptoms of insulin resistance, the diet allowed her to lose weight, clearing up bloating, increasing energy and clearing her skin. However, although her weight loss journey had many physical benefits, nicfrae had to confront the ongoing struggle with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), despite losing over half her body weight.

How Nicfrae Got Into The Keto Diet

After being informed by a doctor that she was at a high risk of developing diabetes, and suspecting insulin resistance, nicfrae began educating herself about the keto diet after finding the r/keto subreddit. The diet, which limits carbohydrate intake and focuses on consuming healthy fats and protein, helped her to lose weight and achieve various other benefits such as boosted brain power and clearer skin.

The Importance of Diet Over Exercise

Despite trying out yoga and Pilates occasionally, nicfrae attributes her weight loss entirely to her diet. Focused on counting both carb and calorie intake, she admitted to sporadically completing workout challenges, but did not incorporate any regular regimen of physical activity. Her success stands as evidence that diet plays a much larger role than exercise when it comes to weight loss.

The Ongoing Struggle With Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Although the weight loss journey had many physical benefits, nicfrae had to confront the ongoing struggle with BDD. Even after shedding more than 50 pounds and nearing her goal weight, there were still days when she couldn’t accept her appearance. Through leaning on the diet as a coping mechanism rather than using unhealthy means of weight loss, however, she finds that through keto she feels that she’s in control.

Conclusion

Nicfrae has lost 55 pounds and still has goals remaining, including reducing the remaining 20 pounds down to 10, but is celebrating not only shedding the weight, but the mental clarity keto has given her. Nicfrae wants to motivate others to try keto, stating that "diet is most important no matter what, and keto is proven to be an effective diet."
