What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measurement using your height and weight to work out if your weight is healthy. While it isn't perfect and doesn't measure body fat directly, it's a useful screening tool that can indicate whether you might be at risk for weight-related health issues.

BMI Categories and What They Mean

Underweight: Less than 18.5 BMI

May indicate nutritional deficiencies, weakened immune system, or other health concerns.

Normal Weight: 18.5 to 24.9 BMI

Associated with the lowest risk of weight-related health problems.

Overweight: 25 to 29.9 BMI

May increase risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.

Obese: Over 30 BMI

Higher risk of serious health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

Important Considerations About BMI

Limitations of BMI

  • BMI doesn't distinguish between weight from muscle and weight from fat
  • Athletes and very muscular people may have a high BMI but not be overweight
  • BMI may not be accurate for elderly people or those who have lost muscle
  • Different ethnic groups may have different healthy BMI ranges
