Insulin Resistance

What is Insulin Resistance?

Insulin resistance is a condition in which your body's cells become resistant to the hormone insulin. Insulin is produced by the pancreas and is responsible for helping your body use glucose (sugar) for energy. When insulin is released into your bloodstream, it signals your cells to absorb glucose from your blood. However, in insulin resistance, your cells don't respond to the insulin signal properly, which leads to high levels of glucose in your blood (hyperglycemia).

Symptoms of Insulin Resistance

Insulin resistance often doesn't cause any symptoms at first, but as the condition worsens, you may experience:

  • Increased hunger and thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Fatigue
  • Blurry vision
  • Slow healing of cuts or bruises

Causes of Insulin Resistance

The exact cause of insulin resistance is unknown, but certain factors may increase your risk, such as:

  • Obesity or being overweight
  • A sedentary lifestyle (not getting enough physical activity)
  • A diet high in refined carbohydrates (such as sugar and white flour)
  • High blood pressure
  • A history of gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy)

Treatment for Insulin Resistance

The main treatment for insulin resistance is lifestyle changes, such as:

  • Losing weight if you're overweight or obese
  • Eating a healthy, balanced diet that is low in refined carbohydrates
  • Getting regular physical activity, such as brisk walking or cycling
  • Taking medication (such as metformin) or insulin therapy to help manage your blood sugar levels if necessary
