Article by Madeleine Smith
Background and Motivation
In May 2015, Geekyfitness, a 6'1" male, weighed 210 lbs and decided to get fit again after seeing vacation pictures. As a tech employee with a sedentary lifestyle and access to free unhealthy meals and snacks, he decided to make some big changes.
Lifestyle Changes
Geekyfitness' largest changes were to stop eating unhealthy food and snacks and to develop better habits. He adopted a paleo-ish diet, cutting out sweets, junk food, and high glycemic index foods, while still allowing himself some indulgences. He also picked up non-screen hobbies, such as hiking and tennis, and started focusing on strength training instead of fat loss.
Weight Loss and Gain
Geekyfitness saw results quickly, with the weight dropping off to 176 lbs within the first half year. However, when his girlfriend's family visited from Brazil, he indulged a bit and went back up to 182 lbs. But instead of just focusing on losing fat, he decided to build muscle to avoid being skinny fat.
Strength Training
Geekyfitness started with machine lifts, slowly transitioning to free weights. He felt the difference in his posture and daily life, and is happy with the intensity and reward of the workouts.
Lessons Learned
Geekyfitness' transformation shows that small changes to diet and lifestyle can lead to significant weight loss and muscle gain. He encourages others to find what works best for them and to stay persistent in their fitness journey.
