A weight loss journey cut short by cancer diagnosis
Reddit user tenspeed2 had achieved an impressive weight loss of 95 pounds through his own hard work before he was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer that affected his lower esophagus. With treatment, which he still receives to this day, he had to have his stomach entirely removed.
Back to exercise after surgery and chemo
Although his body was still recovering from the aftermath of cancer and chemo, tenspeed2 was finally able to start exercising again, marking a new beginning in his fitness journey. With a starting weight of 225 pounds and determination, he began weight training once more.
The importance of support groups
In his comments, tenspeed2 also highlighted a key aspect for cancer survivors: finding support groups. Specific to his cancer, he had difficulty finding a community with people who had undergone the same experience, but he found some solace in groups for individuals recovering from weight loss surgery.
Taking small steps towards recovery
Tenspeed2 acknowledges that his eating patterns will never be the same as it was before the surgery. Without his stomach, he has to eat small amounts of food, and even then, what he eats will go straight to his intestines. Despite it all, he remains optimistic and determined in his journey to regain his strength and to stay healthy.
Inspiration for others to take control of their own journeys
Although tenspeed2's journey was impacted by a life-changing diagnosis, his story highlights the importance of taking ownership of one's health journey. Through hard work, determination, and getting involved in supportive communities, anyone can take steps to improve their wellness and work towards their fitness goals.
