Starting the Journey

At the start of 2021, reddit user roo_79 knew that they had to change their life before they reached a point of no return. Weighing over 400lbs, they decided to try surgical weight loss but began the journey before being referred to the program. They started counting calories and cut out fast food and soda while setting their daily calorie limit to 1500.

Stepping Up the Effort

Within the first month, roo_79 had lost 35lbs and continued to lose about 15lbs each month after, with occasional water fasts of 24-72 hours if hitting a plateau. By mid-July, they had hit their goal of being 300lbs and was in the program. Even though advised to eat 2200 calories, they continued on their smaller portions of 1200 calories, averaging it if they felt full. At this time, a treadmill was obtained, where they tried doing 3-5 hours of exercise weekly.

Achieving Goals

Gastric bypass was done in late September 2021. Although, roo_79 questioned whether or not it was necessary as they had achieved their goal of losing 138lbs before the surgery, they went ahead with it. Since September, they have lost another 36lbs through exercises and dietary changes, with an average day consisting of 60-90 minutes of treadmill, protein shake, yogurt, protein bar, non-starchy veggies, dinner of under 400 calories, and sleeping early. Roo_79 has persevered in keeping their calorie intake low and not cheating on the diet.

Lessons Learned

Roo_79's journey could inspire others to take up the challenge and start their weight-loss journey. Lessons learned include the importance of self-accountability, regular exercise, and sticking to a calorie-deficit diet. Significant weight loss can be achieved within a year by staying committed and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It's worth noting that gastric bypass should not be taken lightly as a quick-fix to weight loss, as dietary and exercise habits must be addressed and maintained. Should you consider surgical options, talk to your physician first.

Conclusion

Losing weight takes time, patience, and discipline, but roo_79 proves that it is possible. With a combination of healthy eating and exercise habits and the support of friends, anyone can achieve their weight-loss goals. Regardless of where you stand on this issue, Roo_79's story sheds light on how surgery can be an additional tool to use in your weight-loss journey, but knowledge of your alternatives should be thoroughly understood before taking that step.
