When the body doesn't have enough carbs to burn into energy, it begins to burn fat, which generates ketones. Ketones are released into the bloodstream and are used as an alternative fuel source.

Not in Ketosis?

Just_my_opinion_ explains through his Reddit posts of how the ketogenic strips showed that he wasn't in ketosis due to the absence of acetone breath, normal urine smells, and that stick wouldn't even entertain the thought of changing to a shade of a different color. However, it may have been a false negative as many users confess that the strips are useless and that he was probably naturally in ketosis due to his diet.
