Progressive Overload
Definition
Progressive overload is a training principle in fitness that involves gradually increasing the weight or intensity of your exercises over time. This means that as your body adapts to your current workout-routine">workout routine, you need to challenge it with more weight or reps in order to continue making progress.
Examples
For example, if you are currently lifting 10-pound dumbbells for bicep curls, and you're able to do 3 sets of 12 reps with good form, over time, you should increase the weight to 12.5 or 15-pound dumbbells to continue challenging your muscles. Similarly, if you are running at a comfortable pace for 30 minutes, you may want to gradually increase your speed, distance or time to make it more challenging.
