DOMS
DOMS stands for Delayed Onset muscle-soreness">Muscle Soreness, which is the pain and stiffness felt in the muscles a day or two after an intense workout or physical activity. This condition typically affects people who engage in activities that their muscles are not used to or have not done in a while. It usually peaks within 24 to 72 hours after the physical activity and can last up to a week.
Symptoms of DOMS
The symptoms of DOMS include:
- Muscle soreness
- Stiffness
- Tenderness to the touch
- Swelling
- Reduced range of motion in the affected muscles
Causes of DOMS
DOMS occurs when muscles are subjected to more strain or tension than they are used to. This can lead to microscopic damage to the muscle fibers, which results in inflammation and pain. The body's natural response to this microscopic damage is to repair and rebuild the damaged muscle fibers, which leads to muscle growth and strength gain over time.
Treating DOMS
The best way to prevent or reduce the severity of DOMS is to gradually increase the intensity and duration of physical activity to give the muscles time to adapt. Rest, stretching, and hydration can also help reduce the symptoms of DOMS. Pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medications may also be helpful but should be taken with caution as they can have side effects. Foam rolling, massage, and other recovery techniques can be useful in minimizing the symptoms of DOMS.
